The Future is Unwritten-DVD Documentary

Julien Temple, one of the early documentarians of the London punk scene and director of the 2000 Sex Pistols film The Filth and the Fury, turns his attention now to that other seminal British band: The Clash--or more accurately, to the band's co-founder, lyricist, rhythm guitarist and lead singer, Joe Strummer. The Future is Unwritten is more than just a biography of Strummer; it is a tribute and exploration of a musician, artist and devoted humanist. Though Temple respects and admires Strummer (his influence is exalted by close friends, peers and fans like Bono and John Cusack), he doesn't romanticize this larger-than-life personality and presents Strummer honestly and not always in flattering light, though the director's fondness for his subject is constant. Most movingly, Strummer himself provides the narration via reassembled excerpts from a variety of interviews and the BBC radio show he hosted during the nineties. In the wrong hands, this could be contrived, but in this masterful documentary it serves as a testament to not just Joe Strummer the myth, but Joe Strummer the man, telling us his story in vivid detail. The Future is Unwritten is a moving and personal portrait of a musician who helped shaped not just punk, but modern music as a whole. --Kira Canny
Customer Review: Amazing movie about a rock legend
There have been several movies made about Joe Strummer but Julien Temple's is unique in its personal touch. Temple was a friend of Strummer's for many years and so had insight into the man behind the music that many people did not have. The movie consists of Joe's life story as told by many friends, acquaintances, fellow artists and others who knew him or were influenced by him over the years. Amazing music, very well put-together, and just a great story about a man who was a huge influence on rock & roll and politics during his time on this earth. Joe was taken from the world too early when he died unexpectedly in December 2002 and after watching this movie one can only wonder what more he would have accomplished. The opening scene of Joe singing "White Riot" a capella in the studio is complemented by the closing scene of Joe and Mick Jones reuniting on stage 20+ years later to perform the same song...even though they were old (and Mick a little bald!) they still ROCKED. If you like the Clash, you must see this movie!!

It surprises us when this type of thing is said and revealed but it happens more often than we sometimes realise.

Spiritual inspirational leadership which is vibrant genuine and sincere is so needed.

King Solomon, with all his wisdom, fame, wealth, popularity and business acumen, became bored.

Do you ever hear people say that today? "Oh, I am bored. I have nothing to do. There is nowhere to go!"

People need God to give shape and purpose for their lives. It was only when Solomon turned away from Almighty God that he became increasingly dissatisfied.

The issues Solomon dared to write about are the same basic issues which bother many people today. Solomon's writings are highly relevant.

He has big important significant questions. Routine bored him. The sun rose and set every day. It never seemed to change. That is not monotony. That is order.

This man who had known such wisdom was baffled, and he began to find life wearisome.

That happens when you marginalise God.

When a man turns from God it is more serious than simple boredom and weariness. When a nation turns from the ways of God, it gets into a terrible tangle. How many nations are in just this very confusion and disarray in these present days?

Solomon decided to become involved in more things. That is not the answer either.

Surely our lives will suddenly change if we have more television, more radio, more travel, more music, more entertainment!

Solomon landed up in a sorry state. It was as though he was just going round in circles and getting nowhere.

He had wandered far and it showed. In his search for satisfaction he explored so many avenues.

If only, at that point, he could have heard these words of Jesus which Peter heard, "Follow Me and I will make you", and if he had responded as Peter responded what a transformation there would have been.

There is one thing you can be sure of - if you follow Jesus Christ you will never be bored!

Big Band Swing music really developed during the roaring 20's from New Orleans Dixieland and Ragtime. Trumpet and coronet player King Oliver had one of the hot bands playing in New Orleans and later New York. The young Louis Armstrong was in this band in the early 20's just before joining Fletcher Henderson. Louis Armstrong was an innovator besides working with bands and bandleaders that were innovators themselves.

Fletcher Henderson: The first important innovator of Big Band Swing

By 1924 Armstrong had joined up with Fletcher Henderson's band. This is were a lot of the real ground work for what came to be big band swing music
took place. Henderson is credited for standardizing the use of trumpets, trombones and saxophones in the big band. Before this the bands were smaller. Many copied his arrangements and later Benny Goodman hired him as an arranger for his own band.

King Oliver's sound was a much smaller band with the instruments going off on their own direction as soloists; one trumpet, one clarinet, and one trombone.

Henderson expanded greatly on that sound and had the different sections of trumpets, trombones, and reeds playing independently from each other but playing together
as fully harmonized sections. He was getting further away from the New Orleans sound and closer to the big band swing sound we usually identify with... and saxophones
instead of clarinets... Yaayyy!

Harlem, New York was the hub
The hot stop in Harlem was the Savoy Ballroom were everyone wanted to play and everyone wanted to dance. The Cotton Club had Duke Ellington as the house band from the late 20's and he was crafting his own big band there writing and arranging and stretching this new musical landscape.

At this time the Cotton Club was different from the Savoy because it was a show room for whites being entertained primarily by black
musicians and dancers. The Savoy was primarily for blacks.

Chick Webb: The Drummers Drummer
Chick Webb was the first drummer to lead a big band and by doing so paved the way for Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, and Louie Bellson, all of whom were blown away by Webb during the "battle of the bands" that were regular events at the Savoy Ballroom.

The Chick Webb Orchestra became the house band at the Savoy around 1931 and became real favorites with the lindy hop dancers who called him "king of the savoy". He and his band were killers at the band battles. Sadly, Webb only lived for 30 years due to tuberculosis of the spine.

Every band that was working at this time and happened to be in New York would stop in at the Savoy either to take part in the battle of
the bands, or just have a drink and check out the "King". Through the 30's the list of musicians that frequented the club is a who's who of the swing era; Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cab Calloway, Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa.... just imagine being there!

The standards and templates had been set right there at the Savoy; Fletcher Henderson with the musical arrangements and Chick Webb with the musical talent that set the performance level.

It seems that history regards the swing era to have started immediately after Benny Goodman's famous performance at the Palomar Ballroom in 1935. This may have been when the rest of America and the world heard about it from the media but big bands had been swingin' since the mid 20's.

There seems to be a similar comparison in the way rock and roll came about to the masses in the mid 50's even though it was alive and well since the late 40's... big band swing, created primarily by blacks in the 20's then a decade later Benny Goodman is called king of swing. Rock and roll is created primarily by blacks in the 40's then a decade later Elvis Presley is calledking of rock and roll... funny how that worked out.

Both Presley and Goodman played a very important role in bringing the most popular music of their time to the masses; Goodman was a hard working band leader and one of the best clarinetist of his day and Elvis had a great voice and stage presence but neither were musical innovators.

The Big Band Swing era ended many years ago but you can still hear it today... tribute bands, neo big band swing groups, college big bands, modern swing bands, Brian Setzer Orchestra etc.

The big band swing sound is here to stay because it's too cool!

THE POSTAL SERVICE - CONE - T-SHIRT

If you are a songwriter, you may sometimes feel like you're in a rut, like you keep coming up with the same basic ideas and situations to write about. One way to break out of this endless loop is to purposely write a song dealing with something lightweight, funny, or just plain strange.

Let's face it. Most pop and rock-type songs are about one and only one subject: good old-fashioned L-O-V-E. That's right, in music it's always boy meets girl, boy loves girl, boy loses girl, singing about it the whole time. There are songs about being lonely and songs about being trapped. There are songs about good relationships, and even more songs about the others. And of course, there's the physical side of things.

Back in the Ancient Days (i.e. the 50s and early 60s), most of the songs were about love all right, but there were always two or three "novelty songs" on the charts and on the radio. The very first song I remember learning to sing along with was "Witch Doctor," by David Seville, with its evocative chorus, "Oo ee oo ah ah, ting tang, walla walla bing bang." Good stuff. There was also "The Purple People Eater," written by Barry Cryer, about a creepy alien who....well, you remember. And who can forget the Chipmunks? (Especially since they're apparently still around.)

Some songs were basically about love, but with a novel take on the subject. Does anyone remember Dodie Stevens singing "Pink Shoe Laces," written by Mickie Grant?

He wears tan shoes with pink shoelaces

A polka dot vest and man oh man

Tan shoes with pink shoelaces

And a big Panama with a purple hat band

It's a little hard to picture the guy she's singing about, but you have to admit they're novel lyrics!

Laugh At Me

There just don't seem to be as many humorous or novelty songs around any more, unless I'm looking for laughs in all the wrong places. As a songwriter, you can take it as a challenging exercise to write at least one song that has an noticeably light touch. But where would you get an idea for such a song? Don't make me laugh! There are ideas all around. The next time your friend cracks you up, make a mental note of what you were joking about and what she said. Odds are you can build a song around it! (I'm serious. This works.)

If someone (maybe you) tells a funny story that has everyone in stitches, guess what? That's another possible subject for a song. You must have heard the ultimate story-song, "Alice's Restaurant," by Arlo Guthrie. Your story doesn't have to be as involved as that one to make for a good song. And feel free to fudge the facts! It's a song, not testimony. Use your imagination. Embellish.

People on TV are always saying things that could be song titles or lines from songs, if you'll just set your ears to listen for them. I've written a lot of songs based on things people said on TV. One of them is "Shut Up and Dance," which was something someone said on an otherwise lame sitcom I saw one night. You can listen to the song here.

As soon as I heard that phrase, I thought it would make a good call-and-response chorus, going back and forth between "shut up and dance" and something else. Once I started writing the verses, I got it all written right away, which is rare for me. I usually have trouble with the third verse, especially when there is a tight pattern of rhyme and rhythm. I really got into being this frustrated guy who just wants to dance. I could have written even more verses if I'd needed them!

Something you might find interesting about this song is that the chord pattern in the bridge is the same as the chorus. I can't remember whether I did that on purpose (probably not), but I can't remember another song where that's true.

Anyway, the point is, if I can do it you can too. Unless you're in a Norwegian death metal band or something, your music is sure to benefit from a touch of humor, a dash of wit. Go for it!
