The Moonlight of Debussy's Clair de Lune

If asked to name a piano piece that is near-perfect, one noted example comes to mind for many people. That piece is Clair de Lune by Claude Debussy. Clair de Lune, the third and most famous movement of Debussy's Suite Bergamasque, has entranced listening ears for over century. It has been the inspiration for many dramatic film sequences, as well as the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" from Disney's Pinocchio.

The son of a china shop owner and a seamstress, Claude Debussy began to reveal his brilliance at the age of seven when he started learning the intricacies of the piano. He soon attracted the attention of Mme. de Fleurville, whose son-in-law, French poet Paul Verlaine, would help inspire the piece with one of his poems. Verlaine was also acquainted with Frederique Chopin, as he was one of Chopin's pupils.

Debussy began his proper musical studies at the illustrious Paris Conservatory at the age of eleven. He spent twelve years studying under the giants of the age, stealing their secrets and arguing against the rigidity of the musical theory of the day. Debussy favored dissonance, which was a thorn in the side of his more strictly harmonious teachers. His love of experimentation, however, proved to be his greatest musical asset.

Early works by Debussy were heavily influenced by both his love of Richard Wagner's operas and his general distaste for the operas of Italian luminaries such as Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi, who was one of the reigning kings of the style. Though Wagner had been dead for several years before Debussy discovered his works, a cult had grown up around his music.

Wagner's influence was not to last, though, as Debussy's pieces tended to be more introverted than the extravagant Wagnerian sounds. He wrote his Suite Bergamasque, containing Clair de Lune, in his late 20s. As a sublime example of Debussy's sensual, quiet style, Clair de Lune may be perhaps his most lasting gift to the music world.

This lustrous piece was inspired, as were his earlier pieces, by one of his friend Verlaine's poems. Verlaine's poem "Clair de Lune" contains a reference to a bergamask, a clumsy dance performed by the natives of Bergamo. The French spelling of bergamask gives the entire suite its memorable name. The name "Clair de Lune," literally translated as "moonlight," is a perfect name, since the piece gives distinct images of moonlight with its rolling notes and glorious harmonies.

Played properly, Clair de Lune requires a technical mastery of sweeping left hand movements and modulations in intensity to reach its timeless quality of melodic and counter-melodic beauty. While the piece is played mostly pianissimo, its brief journeys into louder dynamic ranges present a need for a highly-developed knowledge of the keyboard. This, combined with the ability to re-interpret the feel of the music according to one's own personality, makes Clair de Lune music that has stood the test of time. It is a piece that is constantly evolving, living and breathing in the fingers of pianists the world over.

Rumba in New Zealand

Origin:

Rumba has two origins: Spanish as well as African. Rumba was first danced by African slaves as early as the 16th century. The Rumba folk dance had sexual connotations with the male having a sexually agressive attitude and the female having a deffensive attitude. It gaining popularity in Latin America in the 1920s.

Music:

Like Salsa, Rumba music is played in 4/4 but the music is much slower at just over 100 bpm. Traditionally, Rumba is danced on the second beat with a pause on the first beat although American style Rumba is danced on the first beat. The forth beat is usually accentuated.

Dance:

Rumba is primarily a sex pantomime. The hip movements are quite exaggerated, especially for the men. The men have a sexually agressive attitude in the dance and the women have a sexually deffensive attitude. The women usually dance with a hankerchief in their hands which is waved in front of the body enticing the men, but when the men react the women quickly "cover up". Traditionally, the men "attack" with their hips by getting very close to the women, but some variations allow men to "attack" with other parts and from a distance!

Latinos NZ Popularity Scale: 3/10

Rumba is not a very popular dance in New Zealand's Latin clubs, primarily because Kiwis are fairly reserved on the dance floor. But, as more and more dancers learn the dance it is definitely becoming more popular!

Rumba is the dance of love and sex. So, don't be scared to have some fun!

Help, Due to Physical Problems I Have Difficulty Exercising

"Oh, I can't exercise. I've got a bad knee. I can't lift my arms above shoulder height." How often we hear such statements. They may well be true but most problems need not stop a person from taking part in some form of keep fit activity. The difficulty for most people lies in discovering an approach which suits them.

These days we are all keenly aware that physical activity and a good diet are vital if we want to achieve and maintain optimum health. A workout helps keep ones body and brain healthy as we age. This, in turn, encourages an increase in the brain chemicals which help nerve cells to grow. Other benefits are stronger bones and muscles, better body tone and improved posture and balance.

But knowledge alone is not enough. Putting good intentions into practice can be very difficult indeed - especially so if keeping fit has not been a life-long habit. The consequences of poor diet and inadequate exercise often manifest themselves at a time of life when people find it a real struggle to alter attitudes and practices. If you are someone, who in addition, has to overcome physical restrictions this is even more of a problem.

Changing diet and exercise habits is far from easy for adults. Which is the reason why we need to get our children off to a healthy start. There are no quick fixes whatever claims may be made. Discipline and patience are called for.

However, the situation if far from hopeless for people who have physical problems. There is a form of exercise for everyone. If you are overweight, have difficulties standing or balance problems, for example, you could try working out seated on a chair.

Help could lie in purchasing an exercise DVD. Do be sure though to consult your medical practitioner before beginning a new regime. There are very many methods on offer.

Light weight balls or weights are a wonderful substitute for the machines in gyms if you are a senior citizen, elderly, overweight or a patient undergoing rehabilitation from an injury. Use of balls or weights should lead to an increase in strength, endurance and joint mobility.

Yoga, which can be undertaken as chair only sessions, not only helps with breathing and stress but also improves strength, balance and loosens up the joints.

Problem specific DVDs also exist such as those assisting with back pain, fibromyalgia, heart health, high blood pressure and post-surgery breast cancer rehabilitation. Tai Chi as a help for diabetes and arthritis has been endorsed by medical experts.

Dancing can be an excellent Mind-Body-and-Spirit workout. Research has shown that some patients with Alzheimer's disease can recall forgotten memories when they do dance steps to music they used to know.

Dance helps people of all ages and physical limitations to get and stay in shape. There is even wheelchair dancing which is rapidly growing in popularity. Dance, especially for older people, can be a good way of getting exercise and socializing at the same time.

If you can't or don't want to attend dance sessions then put on some music and dance around the house. Don't forget to spend time warming up and cooling down no matter what form your workout takes!

Don't ever give up and keep focussed on the valuable benefits of exercise!

Beyond the Open Position Piano Chord

Those of you who have been reading my articles for some time know that I'm a big fan of the open position chord. This is where both hands play a chord together. It's a great technique that allows beginners (and pros) sound good at the piano right away. But, it's just one method or way to approach chord piano playing.

Another method I use is something called the crossover technique or arpeggio. Here the left hand plays a cascade of notes ascending or descending (usually ascending) while the right hand plays melody. This technique is especially suited for New Age piano playing because we can get a gentle flow of notes in the left hand. In fact, you can use over 2 octaves just in the left hand. This covers a lot of musical space so to speak and creates a lovely backdrop over which melodies may be composed or improvised.

For example, in the upcoming lesson, "Winter Sky," we have a 16-bar phrase in the Key of B flat. The chords are all charted out for you and you can hear me playing the left-hand crossover pattern. This pattern uses much of the left hand right away. The right-hand plays octave melody notes and the whole piece is finished in a few minutes.

Usually, when we use the open position chord, we skip the third in the left hand. In this lesson, we use the third to create a denser sound. And it works out well! You see, when you block out or chart the chords using the crossover technique, you create a harmonic background, a canvas of sound over which you paint in your foreground using melody instead of paint! A unique, but very helpful way of seeing how an improvisation or composition can be structured!

Breaking New Ground by Breaking-In a New Violin

It's a well-known and respected fact among strings players that new violins and other stringed instruments have to be broken-in with play for the tone to develop.

Though there are many theories which attempt to explain it and there is validity behind the science but we honestly don't know why they require breaking-in. No matter the reasoning it's a no-brainer we string players accept without precise explanation and trust simply from pure experience.

Anyone who has purchased a violin fresh from the maker has witnessed amazing tonal maturity as the instrument is played regularly. A player see this change within the first few days or even hours of playing a quality new instrument. The tone will warm-up and become more rounded and deep.

Even more tonal maturity is easily apparent after 6 months and a violin is considered fully mature after a couple years of play. The longer you play it each day, the faster you will witness the tone improving.

I had a new violin which changed tremendously over a couple years of frequent play. Not only did the harmonics warm-up, but the tone seemed more "mature" and "solid." I used the violin in studio and have recordings which are proof of the tonal development the violin experienced.

This does not apply to all instruments, however. The new instrument in question must have been well-made in order to mature properly. A junky $200 beginner fiddle will not (maybe just barely with a lot of effort) open-up with play.

A player must carefully select an instrument from a reliable maker such as one who has won awards or where their instruments have supported testimonials from other players that the tone will, indeed, open up.

Musicians seeking to enjoy the many benefits of playing a new instrument may glean some knowledge from the following suggestions:

1. Play it, Play it, Play it!

Simple. Just play the darn thing!

Regular, consistent play breathes life into an instrument. No one knows exactly why this is, but it's been witnessed over centuries that playing an instrument keeps it "alive." Why do you think the top museums and shops have their instruments played daily by professional musicians to keep the tone?

Just pick it up and play it a minimum of an hour a day to witness the tone improve. What do you think we violin shop owners do for hours each day? Sit around and pick our noses? Naw, that gets boring, even for us.

2. New Strings Breathe Life into an Instrument

Would you drive a new Ferrari with ragged all-season tires? Your strings are like the tires on a performance vehicle. Bad strings will drag down your instrument's tone.

Therefore, replace your strings every 6-12 months. Don't let them fade out and blame the instrument for the dull tone. Also experiment with different types of strings to find the tone you most prefer. My strings of choice are Pirastro Evah Pirazzi strings.

3. Upgrade Your Bow

Are you still using the cheap bow that came with your first violin? Naughty musician, no bisquit.

Remember the bow you use should match the instrument and that a good bow makes all the difference in the tone you produce on your instrument. Not only will you find it easier and more enjoyable to produce a better tone, but your instrument will break-in faster.

4. Let your Fiddle Enjoy Your Stereo

It may sound ridiculous, but your instrument will benefit from a daily music listening session by the stereo speakers. Or keep your instrument in a room where the television is on much of the time. The vibrations from the speakers will cause your violin, viola or cello to resonate and will speed up the tonal break-in period.

5. Adjustments & Proper Setup

To follow the Ferrari analogy, you need to give your instrument a "tune-up" from time to time. You've put all this money into buying the darn thing, you should pay a bit to keep it running smoothly!

Always check that your instrument set up properly as you tune it. Correct the bridge angle as you tighten the pegs as it be pulled toward the pegs by the strings. Also check inside the F-hole and memorize where the soundpost is set. The soundpost could be budged loose during shipping and it's good to know what to expect when you look inside.

Even if you can't see visible changes it's a good idea to have your luthier check the bridge/soundpost configuration for optimal tone. Also ask him or her to look for any buzzes, seam cracks, wear or any other problems which may crop up. We owe it to our instruments to make sure they are kept in good health and tone.

6. Careful Storage and Transport

It can never be stressed enough how important careful storage and transport routines are to your instrument's health. What good is a gorgeous-sounding cello if you're going to trip on it in the dark and smash it to bits... That was a rhetorical question, by the way.

Never, never leave your instrument in the car. Big no no. BAAAAAAD viola player. Not only could it be stolen, but it could be damaged by the extreme heat, humidity, cold and dryness which are more extreme in vehicles throughout the year.

When travelling by car make sure the instrument will not fall over or be damaged where it is stored. Try to travel with it in the back seat on the floor rather than in the trunk or boot.

Don't let the airline check your fiddle. Get hostile and froth at the mouth before you let them put it under the plane. Tell them Rhiannon gave you that advice and watch airport security laugh at my little joke. Really, I'm sure they'll get a kick out of your enthusiasm for your music!

Really, try not to fly with your instrument under the plane. It's just a risky proposition.

Use a hygrometer if extreme dryness is a concern where you live. The Dampit is best as it goes inside the instrument and humidifies it from within.

Wrap your instrument in a cloth before putting it in its case. [Not great advice for cellists or bassists: you people should just cough up the cash and get a proper hard-shell case with wheels so you won't break your instrument or your back, hence the wheels.]

Don't keep the violin in its case under your bed, where it tends to be cold and dusty. Instead find a large space on a bottom book shelf where the case can rest.

If you like leaving the instrument out where it is easily accessible, use an instrument holder or stand rather than resting it on its back on your cluttered coffee table or greasy dinner table. [Okay, anyone who knows me has seen me put my fiddle on my paper-infested office desk, but I do have a very nice violin rack which I also use].

Just don't leave your violin *ON* your bed. Dumb thing to do, especially if you are a teenager and prone to throwing things across the room and whacking your violin. Not naming any names... Mary...

7. "Tone Guarantees" Provide a Safety Net

Since some new instruments may take a while to break in, their tone may not open up within the limited time they play it in shop or have on trial period in their homes.

My shop carries instruments from many award-winning and respected Asian, Canadian and European makers. I know these instruments are of substantial quality that I offer the safety-net of an unprecidented "Tone Guarantee."

The tone guarantee promises that the new instruments' tone will improve greatly as played and be completely different instruments after a year of play or your money back. This guarantee takes the risk out of the purchase and helps the player settle into a new instrument which will improve in tone and value.

8. Enjoy your Instrument!

Keep life simple, just play your fiddle or cello and enjoy it. The tone will open up and you will want to play it more every day... until the next upgrade!

Interesting Facts About Olympic Champions

Did you know...

Nadia Comaneci was a Romanian-born gymnast who won many Olympic medals. For many sportswriters, Nadia is the greatest athlete of all time. In the 1970s and early 80s, she was a member of the Romanian Olympic gymnastics team. When she was 13 years old, Nadia won four gold medals at the 1975 European Championship in Skien, Norway. She defeated Ludmilla Turishcheva (USSR), who won two Olympic and four world titles (1972-1974). Nadia Comaneci was discovered by Bela Karolyi. He said: "I was visiting the kindergarten that day and I saw two little six-year-old girls playing in the courtyard during the recreation period. They were running and jumping around, pretending they were gymnasts. Then the bell rang, and they ran into the school with all other little girls and I lost them. I knew I would never leave that school until I found those two little girls. I went into each class of that kindergarten looking for them. I went through twice without seeing them. The third time around I asked each class, 'Who loves gymnastics? In each class a few of the little girls would raise their hands. But in one class two of them sprang up and shouted, 'We do! We do!' and I had found them. One was Nadia Comaneci. The other one is now a very promising ballerina".

Said Aouita is a legendary athlete of the Kingdom of Morocco (Africa). He was one of the world's most famous runners. This Arab sportsperson won a gold medal in the 5000m at the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and set several world records in the 1980s (1,500m, 2,000m, 3,000m and 5,000m ). In the 1988 Olympics, he only won a bronze medal in the 800 metres. Said was the favourite to win three Olympic gold medals. In an interview with Michael Janofsky, published February 5, 1989 by the New York Times, he explained: "From the point of view of morale, it was a catastrophe that I lost in Seoul".

The Pakistani field hockey team has won two Olympic titles: 1960 and 1968. It also won the Field Hockey World Championship four times ( 1971, 1978, 1982, 1994).This country has won the Asian Tournament a record seven times: Tokyo'58, Jakarta'62, Bangkok'70, Tehran'74, Bangkok'78, New Delhi'82 and Beijing'90. In 1979, Pakistan won the World Junior Cup.

Kirsty Coventry, the Olympic champion of 2004, is the best African female athlete in history. She was born on September 16, 1983 in Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe (former Rhodesia). Like many Latin American and African sportspeople, she currently lives and trains in the United States. Unfortunately, Zimbabwe is one of the Africa's poorest countries. She once said, "The USA experience was very useful for me, as I had a scholarship for the University of Auburn and the opportunity to have contact with the best female American swimmers. The Malay Peninsula has thrived from its central position in the maritime trade routes between China, India and the Middle East. It is shown on early map with a label that translates as "Golden Chersonese"; the Straits of Malacca were referred to as "Sinus Sabaricus". The two distinct parts of Malaysia, separated from each other by the South China Sea, share a largely similar landscape in that both West and East Malaysia feature coastal plains rising to often densely forested hills and mountains. Putrajaya is the newly created administrative capital whereas the capital city isKuala Lumpur. Georgetown, Ipoh, Johor Bahru, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Alor Sar, Malacca Tow, and Klang are the major cities.

Learn Piano Fast - Even if You Don't Know Where Middle C is!

So, you want to learn how to play piano. So do thousands of others around the world. Here's how they usually go about it.

First, they try to find a piano teacher close to where they live. They may or may not know what style they want to learn, but figure the piano teacher can help them figure this out.

Next, it's off to the piano teacher for the first appointment. What usually happens here is the teacher gives the student "an assessment" to see what they know. Now, for the most part, piano teachers won't ask prospective students what they want to learn because they assume it will be classical in nature.

The benefits for the piano teacher in teaching the classical method are enormous! First, students must learn how to read music and this can take anywhere from 1-month to 1 year depending on how fast a learner the student is. Second, students learn classical repertoire and this can literally take forever. As this is happening over time, the student becomes a piano player who can read sheet music and play the music of dead composers reasonably well. That's the goal anyway.

The student at this point may have spent thousands of dollars learning how to do this thus increasing the piano teachers income. What a great deal for the piano teacher! But what about the student?

Listen, if your goal is to learn how to note-read and play other peoples music for fun then that is what you should do. But if you're interested in a more creative approach to piano playing, you may want to seek out a teacher who will show you how to play piano using a chord-based approach. Here's why:

  1. Time spent learning is greatly reduced. Listen to this... you can learn most chords on the piano within one month's time. You won't be an expert at it, but you'll know enough to get around on the piano. This puts you light years ahead of your classical playing counterparts.
  2. Musicianship is quickly realized. Do you know that most classical players don't have a clue how what they are playing was created? That's right! They just play the notes like a typist and never understand the mystery behind the music. Now, if you learn chords, inevitably, you're going to learn about chord charts and once you learn how to "chart out music," you'll be thinking like a composer. You'll be quantum leaps ahead of most classically trained musicians.
Look, if you really want to learn how to play piano fast, learn a chord-based approach first. You can always learn note reading later on.
